Application Design for SATT Purification Team

Company & Year: Bristol Myers Squibb. 2018-2021

Project Overview: Active Journal v3.1 is the next generation software application built for BMS SATT purification labs to leverage process automation and optimize workflows.

Project Goal: Some parts of the SATT team’s existing application were over 20 years old. These were replaced with the new innovative application Active Journal 3.1 which will rest upon a completely new database.

My Role: UI/UX designer. I was involved in the entire design process, from brainstorming layout and content ideas to designing the final solution.

Ideation:  I spent multiple brainstorming sessions with the product owner and business analysts to create the user interface in a complete agile environment. User stories for developers were written for each sprint based on the wireframes that I designed.

Design Process:  Once the initial layout, content placement and architecture were in place, necessary data was mapped from the updated new database. The development team was in complete charge of development and deployment of this new application.

I continued to design more and more screens and features based on the requirements gathered through weekly meetings, interviews with the purification team, user research, UAT  and QA analysis.

Challenges: Active Journal 3.1 was an agile project built on iterative life cycles and incremental steps towards its completion.  Aiming to keep pace with the fast-changing technology developments, often the scope changed during the planning and implementation stages. Several design adjustments and modifications were made to improve project performance as the project requirements rapidly kept changing.

Conclusion:  Active Journal v3.1 full project life-cycle lasted about 3 years. I was involved from start to finish. Prior to new application, the SATT purification teams relied on disparate, isolated software to organize the request queues, data, and reporting. The deployed upgrades are critical for the integration of multiple teams into a seamless purification team as they process almost 40,000 samples annually. Additionally, this new platform will be the launching pad for integration of the other BMS labs in the future.
